The very name Zanzibar is magical, conjuring up romantic and exotic images. The island and the main town are steeped in history, full of atmosphere and extremely attractive to visit. There are beautiful beaches on the eastern side of the island; vast clove plantations, lovely reefs and friendly people abound here.

The island has been a stopping point for traders since the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs. Consequently a wonderful cultural mix of Chinese, Indian, Arabic, African and European people emerged. The architecture and local people reflect this fascinating blend.

The old town is a delightful maze of narrow, winding streets, overhanging balconies and a distinct Arabic flavor. Even with a map, it is quite easy to get lost; asking your hotel for a guide is a good idea!

There are a number of interesting places to visit, such as old slave trader houses, the fort, the People's Palace and the dhow harbor. There are also abundant cafes and restaurants where you can relax and sample the fresh, Zanzibar seafood dishes.

Once outside the old town, the beaches are the main attraction of Zanzibar. Scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, biking and relaxing are available, with the eastern coast in particular providing an excellent beach vacation.
