Patrick's Mobile Camps
|
The Solio and Aberdare Mountain Circuit is one of Kenya's most
popular safaris, allowing you to experience many different landscapes and eco-systems
from one comfortable base. Solio itself is a 65,000 acre cattle ranch of which
18,000 acres was set aside as Kenya's first rhino sanctuary on private land. Patrick
Reynolds's Solio Camp is situated alongside the reserve, allowing easy access
both on foot and in vehicle.
There are approximately 120 black and white rhino within the
sanctuary; one can see up to 40 individuals in a single day. In our opinion the
Solio reserve is one of the better places in Africa for viewing both species of
rhino. With plenty of opportunities to walk in the reserve, you may spot many
varieties of wildlife, including giant forest hog, Colobus monkey, lion, leopard,
cheetah, hyena and reticulated giraffe.
|
|
Solio Camp guests contribute to the continued protection of rhino, as well
as the conservation of the land simply by staying at the Camp. Your presence provides
needed jobs to the local community, reducing their dependence on extractive land
use patterns. The Camp is seasonal, designed and built to ensure minimal impact
on the natural environment.

Aberdares National Park
From the Camp you are just 20 minutes drive from the Salient in the Aberdare Mountains
National Park. This stunningly beautiful park goes up to 13,000 ft with
good opportunities of seeing elephant, rhino, bushbuck, Colobus and Sykes
monkeys, buffalo and the tiny suni antelope. Many guests have been able
to spot all of the "Big Five" animals in one day. Also boasting deep valleys,
soaring peaks and cascading waterfalls, this Park offers superb scenery in
addition to is wonderful wildlife viewing.
Mobile Camping
Hannington Speke, the celebrated 19th Century explorer wrote, "In my camp I feel
the tempo, the pulse and the freedom that is Africa. To live in any other way
is to lose that intimate bond between myself and nature." To experience that bond,
a visit to Patrick's Camp is needed. This superbly run mobile camp is located
in the foothills of the magnificent Aberdare Mountains. With easy access to the
mountains and to Solio's famous rhino sanctuary, Patrick Reynolds and his staff
ensure a wonderful, intimate introduction to Africa's natural beauty.

Patrick Reynolds's Mobile Camp at Tiva River
In the huge expanse of the Tsavo East National Park, Patrick Reynolds and his
Mobile Camps will take you exploring.
Using a combination of the small, traditional tented safari base camp at Tiva
River and comfortable fly camps, Patrick and his attentive staff allow an unparalleled
opportunity to roam through the African bush. Unrestricted by the need to return
to a stationary lodge, you are able to follow the wildlife as they traverse the
starkly beautiful Tsavo landscape.
Few vehicles traverse this remote area; the thick bush makes it good walking
country. In the company of your professional guide, naturalist and host, you will
be introduced to one of the wildest parks in Kenya. This is a unique opportunity
to benefit from the knowledge and experience of a local resident in this remote
park.

Your Host
Patrick Reynolds has been hosting personal safaris for 16 years and has been operating
safaris on the Tiva River in Tsavo East National Park since 1991. He has the knowledge
and experience of the area required to ensure an excellent mobile safari. As the
host of the only safari camp allowed in this huge (11,000 sq km) section of Tsavo,
Patrick can offer a superb insight into this little explored and totally unspoilt
region.

Your Accommodation
Spacious single and double tents are used on safari, each with its own toilet
and shower combination. The beds in base camp are wooden with comfortable mattresses;
the fly camp beds are metal and canvas with thick mattresses and pockets provided
on the sides for personal belongings. The lighting is solar powered, providing
a switch light inside each tent. Hurricane lanterns are provided for the outside
areas, including the toilets. Hand basins are situated outside and are filled
with warm water periodically. There is plenty of hot water for the showers at
all times. The toilets are the old-fashioned long drop style and are lined with
lime-ash several times each day.
Meals
Delicious meals are served in a frame tent, open on three sides, with ample space
to seat up to 12 people. A fridge and deep freeze are brought along to provide
cold drinks; ice and bottled water is supplied and available at all times. You
may be mobile, but your creature comforts are never lacking!
Activities
The Tiva River area is justly famous for its walking safaris and Patrick's specialty
is tracking animals through the bush to catch those unexpected glimpses of animal
behavior. The tough, 4x4 vehicles allow for excellent game drives and exploration
further afield. A typical day starts at 6.30am with a walk and a picnic on the
way under a shady tree; sometimes you find yourself walking around a corner and
being met with a bush breakfast set up by the crew!
Candle-lit bush dinners are another popular option and are often set up as
a surprise. Sundowners are another highlight as one watches the orange sun sink
behind the horizon, and if a full moon is present that evening, waiting to watch
that come up in the opposite direction. After a sundowner, a night game drive
takes you back to base camp.
Fly camping to another area, either to a waterhole further down the Tiva River,
or near Lugard's Falls on the Galana River is another option that takes you further
into the Tsavo wilderness.
For an authentic wilderness experience, look no further than the Tiva River
Camp, a safari adventure you will remember for years to follow!
