Canoeing in Kenya and Tanzania

Canoeing through mangrove swamps in the Tana Delta.

Where? Lake Manyara, Lake Baringo, Tana River Delta and other places

Best time: Any Time

Canoeing in East Africa is a superb way to get close to the wildlife without the noise and restrictions of a vehicle.

Although not possible in all locations due to hippo and crocodile populations, canoeing is possible in some of the Rift Valley lakes.

Kenya's Lake Baringo offers wonderful opportunities to paddle with local fishermen, learning about their culture and fishing techniques. Kenya's Lake Naivasha also offers several boat trips, concentrating on visits to the wonderful Crescent Island Sanctuary, famous for its bird life.

However, the latest addition to the canoeing fraternity is in Lake Manyara, Tanzania. Permission has been given for canoeing safaris here, the only National Park to do so in East Africa. Along with your expert guides, you'll enjoy an afternoon or morning of gentle paddling along the shores of this shallow lake, watching the abundant wildlife that frequent the grassy shores.

No previous experience is required for canoeing in East Africa. For the active adventurer, canoeing is truly an exhilarating addition to your dream safari!
