The warm, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean are an irresistible draw to
water lovers; there is no better way to explore this environment than to strap
on a mask and snorkel and go for a swim!
East Africa's coast is rimmed with long, fringing reefs that shelter inner
lagoons from the rougher weather and larger creatures. Snorkeling in the clear,
blue waters of these lagoons provide a breathtaking introduction to marine life.
Small coral heads along sandy channels are scattered throughout the lagoons,
forming the main habitat for the thousands of tropical reef fish species that
live in this part of the world.
At low tide, the coral heads are generally only two or three feet below the
surface allowing you to easily spot the fish, lobsters and rays while keeping
water between yourself and the easily damaged coral itself.
With virtually no currents, many well-protected areas, thousands of marine
species and excellent visibility, snorkeling off East Africa's coast is a must
for all water lovers!
